QR Codes: The Unexpected Tech Star of the 2024 Presidential Election

QR Codes usage in US elections

From being a mere tracking tool to being a part of the Presidential Election? QR codes have come a long way! This has to be a tech twist no one saw coming, as they became game changers in how presidential candidates took a step ahead to connect with their voters.

Let’s take a deep dive in 2024’s Presidential elections’ aftermath to understand how Donald Trump and Kamala Harris turned these digital tools into powerful campaign weapons.

Table of Contents

Trump’s campaign: Rallies gone digital with QR codes

Have you noticed that one giant QR code on the screen behind trump? It was right behind him on almost every stage . At Trump’s campaign rallies across different states, you couldn’t miss the huge QR code on the screen right behind him. It was actually pretty clever. When people pulled out their phones to scan it, they’d land straight on Trump’s website with a message that was specifically made for their state.

The Secret Sauce: Location-Based QR Strategies

Trump campaign using location based QR Codes to boost support

The Trump campaign didn’t just randomly scatter QR codes – they got smart about it. Different regions got different codes, leading to locally tailored content and events. A QR code in Texas might lead to information about border policies, while one in Michigan focused on automotive industry initiatives.

How did they do it?

Let’s assume you’re at a trump rally in Nevada and scanned the QR code behind him- you’d get Trump’s special message just for Nevada folks. There was a different QR for each state. The website would also open out a quick form, which was their way of collecting supporter info with people’s consent.

Example of personalized QR Codes used by Trump Campaign

It was basically like signing up for updates, but way easier than the old-school clipboard method. The whole thing was simple but smart – just point your phone, scan, and you’re connected.

What made their QR strategy click with supporters?

It was the Personalized messages. The personalized message for every state spreads a sense of being heard or seen amongst the people. This resulted in people’s trust in this party.

Harris's Campaign: Teaching Through QR codes

Kamala Harris extensively uses QR Code in her campaigns

At the AAPI Victory Fund concert, Kamala’s team also jumped on the QR code trend, but with their own spins. When people at the concert scanned the QR code with their phones, it took them to a website that broke down Kamala Harris’s policy plans. It was smart to educate people about her future policies. People could also access the campaign details.

What made it click?

This strategy made her campaign interactive. Along with accessing all the updates they could also connect with her other digital platforms.

QR codes used everywhere in Harris' campaign

How did her QR strategy work?

What made this approach stand out was her team’s digital tool called “Reach.” It was pretty different from the usual campaign stuff. When people scanned her QR codes they were sent to an app, there they didn’t just get boring campaign updates – they got plugged into this whole interactive experience. You could watch videos that explained her policies (no fancy political jargon!), get real-time campaign updates, and even chat with other supporters. Think of it like a political social network, but way more focused.

Why This QR Revolution Mattered in 2024’s Elections

The numbers tell the story. There was a significant increase in voter engagement through QR-initiated interactions.

Using QR codes in the presidential campaigns turned out to be pretty game-changing for voters. Instead of having to dig through news sites or scroll through endless social media posts, people could just whip out their phones, scan a code, and boom – they’d instantly know what their candidate was up to.

It made keeping up with the election feel less like homework and more like checking your social media. Plus, since voters could easily access real information about each candidate’s plans and activities, they weren’t just voting based on what they heard through the grapevine. They could actually compare what each candidate was offering and make their choice based on solid facts.

Key Takeaways

Whether you’re a voter or working on future campaigns, here’s what makes QR codes so powerful:

Trump’s Campaign

In 2024’s presidential elections, Donald Trump’s team made an extra effort to not just incorporate QR codes in their political campaigns, instead they went for a better strategy. His team’s approach was to incorporate personalized QR in his rallies for different locations.

Their strategy provided them an overview of the data like where their QRs were scanned more. The personalized QR also allowed them to present a customized version of their website only for the location.

Kamala’s Campaign

Her QR strategy was more focused on educating people about her policies but Kamala’s team was also not behind in making their QR strategy stand out. They created a platform called ‘reach’ which made her campaigns really interactive. Their app ‘REACH’ created an ecosystem for her voters to connect and interact. The QR was shared to download the app.

Her QR strategy for various campaigns made it easy for her team to understand which policy is being criticized or appreciated, as they had the direct access to the comments made on Reach app.

Your Turn to Engage

QR codes have emerged as a powerful digital engagement tool, transforming how we share information instantly. From marketing to payments, these simple black and white square patterns are dedicated to make our lives a little easier.

If you’re looking to create your own personalized QR code. Then QR Code Developer is the tool you were looking for. Using QR Code Developer you can generate custom codes tailored to your needs. How to get more scans on your QR Code?

How to increase QR Code scans?

Why Won’t Anyone Scan my QR Code? This thought haunts many. In fact, there are many marketers spending day and night on perfecting their campaigns, yet they just won’t get those scans they need. If you’re here because you’re one of them, then don’t worry! And know that it’s not your fault. Let’s face it, your fancy black-and-white squares are getting about as much attention as a mime at a heavy metal concert.

There are many articles online about why you should incorporate QR codes in your ad campaigns. But what if no one is scanning your QR codes? And why would they? When was the last time you scanned a QR on a package yourself?

You’re not alone in the “my QR code is being ignored” club. But how can you fix that? In this blog, you’ll learn some unknown tricks to attract more scans.

Table of Contents

The Truth About QR Codes

Before we directly jump into the solutions, let’s address the elephant in the room: QR codes actually aren’t as new a technology as many perceive them to be. It is important to understand what are those few things going off, making a whole black and white weird looking square with patterns go unnoticed? The thing is QR codes have been around longer than some of your favourite TikTok influencers have been alive!

But here’s the thing – while everyone and their grandmother learned to scan QR codes during the pandemic (thanks, to social distancing), getting people to actually WANT to scan your code is a whole different ball game.

4 Game-Changing Strategies to Make Your QR Code Irresistibly Scannable

1. You need to give Your QR Code a Makeover 💅

Add colours and branding to your QR Codes

QR codes go unnoticed because they all appear the same to the human eye!

Picture this: You see a black and white square pattern on every poster or package. What will make you go “oh wow so cool, it’s the 17th time I am seeing an identical QR, let me go scan it.” Nothing right? Your QR code needs a transformation by Miranda Priestly herself!

Here’s what you can do:

  • Add colors to your lifeless QR code and keep the contrast high – we want it pretty and bright.
  • Incorporate your logo in the center.
  • Use rounded corners instead of sharp edges just like the Instagram Logo.
  • Add a gradient effect that matches your brand aesthetic.

Pro tip: Just like you wouldn’t wear a tuxedo to the beach, make sure your QR code design matches its environment. A QR code on a subway ad needs different styling than one on a wedding invitation! Remember it’s all about matching the vibes.

2. Make the Value Proposition Crystal Clear 💎

Add attention grabbing hooks to your QR Codes

You know what’s worse than an ugly or boring QR code? A mysterious one with a BAD HOOK. If your QR code is giving off more “sketchy link in a spam email” vibes than “must-scan-this-right-now” energy, we’ve got a problem.

Try these attention-grabbing hooks:

  • Scan for 20% off your next purchase!
  • Unlock exclusive content 🔓
  • Scan to win a free coffee ☕
  • Take a selfie with our AR filter 🤳
  • Join the secret menu club 🍔

Remember: People are like cats – they need to know there’s something worthwhile in the box before they’ll jump in! People hold their pee when they’re in bed—you think they’ll scan your QR code if it’s not for something exciting?

3. Location, Location, Location!

Strategically place your QR Codes to increase scans

You wouldn’t put a “Watch Your Step” sign AFTER the stairs, right? The same logic applies to QR code placement. Think about where your audience will be when they’re most likely to scan:

  • Place codes at eye level (unless you want people doing yoga to scan them)
  • Ensure there’s good lighting (no one’s pulling out their phone flashlight for your code)
  • Make them big enough to scan from a comfortable distance
  • Add them where people naturally wait (elevator banks, checkout lines, bathroom stalls – yes, really!)
  • Consider the scanning environment (moving subway? maybe not. Coffee shop table? perfect!)

4. Create FOMO-Inducing Experiences

Create FOMO through QR Code hooks to increase scans and outcomes

Nothing motivates humans quite like the fear of missing out. Make your QR code the gateway to exclusive experiences that people can’t resist.

If you’re a marketer reading this blog, you’ll know this trick that brands use – Creating a fake scarcity even though there’s a whole bunch of inventory stocked. For example: only a few pieces left, used by many big brands and more . This tricks customers into thinking that everyone is buying this product hence they should too!

Use these hooks for this trick:

  • Time-sensitive offers – “Scan in the next 24 hours for double points!”
  • Limited quantity deals – “First 100 scanners get…”
  • Location-specific content – “Unlock the secret menu available only at this location”
  • Interactive experiences – “Join our live AR event happening now!”
  • Progressive rewards – “Scan 5 times this month for VIP status”

Using these four tricks will surely bring some change to your QR scanning rate.

Pro tip for QR code users: Test, Track, and Optimize 📊

Here’s where we get a bit nerdy (in a cool way). Like any good marketing strategy, your QR code campaign needs data. Here are some ways you can actually benefit by using QR Code Developer and collect crucial data that would help you grow your business:

  • Use different codes for different locations/purposes to know where your products are getting purchased more. If sales are not from an online platform, this trick can help you collect demographic data that will help you skyrocket your sales.
  • Track scanning patterns such as time of day, location, and conversion rates.
  • A/B test different designs and call-to-action hooks. See which hook gets you more scans by using different QR codes.
  • Collect feedback from users who’ve scanned your QR. The customer’s feedback will directly help you grow your business.

Final Thoughts

In a world where attention spans are shorter than a TikTok video, your QR code needs to work harder than ever to get noticed. But with these strategies, you’re well on your way to creating QR codes that people will actually WANT to scan.

And hey, if all else fails, you can always stand next to your QR code doing the Macarena – though we can’t guarantee that’ll increase scanning, it’ll definitely get attention! 😉

Want more marketing tips and tricks? Share this article with your network and let’s make the world a more scannable place, one QR code at a time!

In fact, in the year 2023 approximately 89% of smartphone users scanned a QR code at least once. With their prompt and easy method of directing users to different types of data pages, they are now a core part of many industries today. Be it cashless payments or marketing campaigns, you will easily find QR codes everywhere.

However, over the years we have observed that whenever a technology is adopted by masses, along with the genuine users it also attracts scammers. It is no shocker that with a widespread use of any technology, comes an increased risk of security breaches. Such as security vulnerabilities like data breaches, phishing (or “quishing”), and other forms of scams. In this blog, we’ll explore how QR code scams work and how you can protect yourself or your business from such security breaches.

How does QR code scams work?

QR codes are stuffed with data or information in a square with unique patterns. When you scan these square of patterns, the code is decoded and you’re directly taken to the information page or the website.

Scammers leverage the simple method of QR codes’ working process. Making it very easy for an unknown QR code redirecting you to a malicious website. Despite their utility and simplicity, a QR code can also hide malicious activities. Let’s take a deep dive on the methods that QR code scammers go by.

QR Code Security Threats

According to the reports, phishing attacks were the second most expensive type of attack costing approximately $4.9 million, making it the most expensive in 17 years  – IBMs Cost of data breach report 2021.

Breaking the record, in 2024, we saw a staggering 10% increase with a highest average breach cost at $5.17 million globally.

Phishing (Quishing) Attacks.

What is QR code phishing?

Phishing is a form of cybercrime in which scammers launch a cyberattack to obtain sensitive data by tricking you. They usually launch the attack through fraudulent emails, messages or websites. People usually fall for such scams as they pretend to be a legitimate entity.

Similarly, when a scammer uses a QR code to steal your sensitive data like payments credentials or passwords instead of Emails or messages, we call it “Quishing” – QR code based phishing.

These fraudulent QR codes are embedded with malicious URLs which direct you to a fraud website. The website is mostly an impersonation of a legitimate entity. They are only designed to steal your data.

QR Codes are not designed for human understanding. They are unique codes meant for computers to decode. This makes it easy for scammers to use QR codes for phishing. At the same time, it is difficult for regular users to recognize when they are being scammed.

Malware and Spyware

A fraudulent QR code can also direct you to a compromized website which initiates the download of a malicious software. Scammers can infect your device with these spyware or malware softwares.

They can further be used in stealing your private data or tracking your device activity by providing unauthorized access to the user’s device. Cybercriminals can use this method to gain control over your devices.

Payment Frauds

QR Code Payments

QR codes are often used for payment systems, particularly in contactless payments. Criminals can easily replace a legitimate QR code with a malicious one, leading users to make payments to fraudulent accounts.

Such fraud can be difficult to trace and recover, especially if proper security measures are not in place.

Case Study: Texas street parking QR scam, USA

After COVID, there was a rapid increase in QR scams. In 2022, scammers hit the cities across street parking stations in Texas, affixing a malicious QR code. The QR directed users to a fraud website impersonating a legitimate entity. Many fell victim to this scam in the USA and ended up paying through a malicious QR.

This came to public attention when employees of ParkHouston noticed a QR affixed in the on-street parking stations. ParkHouston employees told the media, ‘The City of Houston DOES NOT use QR codes on any on-street parking pay stations, nor does the City accept payments through QR codes.’ They also issued a warning to the public ‘to not pay through QR.’ Not just Parkhouston but the FBI had also issued a warning to the public for this scam.

In February of 2022, a new scam came into the public attention after many people fell victim to a phishing scam. Victims reported to police, they saw some unusual activities after they scanned a QR code. The QR code was sent to them via email or text message.

After receiving multiple complaints, police issued a warning regarding a suspicious ‘Singapass QR code’. Singpass or Singapore password is a tool that allows people to transact with different government agencies and businesses. As of today even in 2024 scammers still are tricking people to reveal their credentials.

This was another case where scammers didn’t hesitate to impersonate the govt and scam citizens directly by just sending them a QR code.  These cases should be taken as alarming calls by everyone across the globe and be more cautious while scanning any QR.  It is crucial that we spread awareness across nations about these scams. As awareness is always the first step towards mitigation.
